We hosted a very successful three way collaborative ‘roundtable’ event with guest speakers; Simon Parry from the University of Manchester (and previously The Wellcome Trust), Alex Mermikedes, University of Kingston and Gianna Bouchard, Anglia Ruskin University
Each shared their work on the theme of performance and medicine in connection with the first book they have now completed for the Methuen Performance and Science series (for which Nicola Shaughnessy is one of the series editors).
Dr Alex Mermikides (Kingston University) and Dr Gianna Bouchard (Anglia Ruskin University) will present work on their current book project, which is an edited collection of essays for Bloomsbury Methuen, titled Performance and the Medical Body. They discussed the rationale for the book and consider some of the ways in which performance and medicine are currently being explored by artists, medics and performance scholars. In drawing out some of the main themes emerging in the book, they will think about potential new understandings and areas for future development at the interface of medicine and performance.
Dr Simon Parry (University of Manchester) discussed some of his current research into the politics of science in performance. He will focus in particular on modes of activist performance that invoke, provoke or revoke scientific knowledge-making practices through forms of theatricality and gesture.
